On Monday, July 16th 2018, Ass.-Prof. Korrakot Yaibuathat and Dr. Manuel Woschank presented a project update at the monthly Faculty of Engineering meeting at Chiang Mai University (CMU). The presentation included a project process report, a detail description of planned research activities, and the introduction of the Midterm Meeting videos.

On Wednesday, July 12th 2018, Dr. Manuel Woschank gave a speech about the current research areas of Industrial Logistics research within the SME4.0 context at the IE CMU Meeting @ Bangsak Merlin Resort, Phang Nga, 2018. Moreover, he introduced possible applications of Behavioral Economics theories in the area of Industrial Logistics by focusing on both, laboratory experiments and field studies, supported by Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) procedures.

On 18th of July 2018 Dr. Patrick Dallasega met Prof. Joseph Sarkis at the Foisie Business School of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Massachusetts (USA). Prof. Sarkis is a highly recognized researcher in the fields of operations, supply chain management and sustainability. His research is widely cited and earned the designation of highly cited researcher in 2016 and 2017 from Thomson-Reuters/Clarivate Analytics. The meeting was organized to discuss possible future collaborations in the field of Industry 4.0 and supply chain management. During the meeting, opportunities and challenges of small and medium sized enterprises by using Industry 4.0 concepts in supply chain management were discussed. Special emphasis was set on how Industry 4.0 could improve the environmental aspect of supply chain management in the construction industry. At the end, a collaboration in the form of joint publications in the field of sustainable supply chain management was agreed.

Dr. Manuel Woschank has arrived at Chiang Mai University for his secondment (July 1st – August 31rd) in the course of the SME 4.0 project. We are looking forward to a fruitful research with CMU in the area of Smart Logistics.

During his secondment at Elcom sro in Presov (Slovakia), Dr. Erwin Rauch conducted an analysis to identify potentials for the application of Industry 4.0 concepts in production. The methodology used was both a classic Value Stream Mapping analysis and an Industry 4.0 Assessment approach developed in the project. The results and measures developed in cooperation with production manager Slavomir Michrina and logistics manager Peter Vozar were presented to the management and will be processed and implemented in further secondments.

Since May 21st 2018 Assoc. Prof. Trasapong Thaiupathump and Assoc. Prof. Rungchat Chompu-inwai are in the scope of the SME 4.0 Project on Research Exchange at University of Leoben in Austria.

On 05th and 06th of June 2018 Prof. Chris Brown organized a short course and workshop to teach basic principles as well as advanced and quantitative applications of Axiomatic Design (AD) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in USA. Dr. Eric Gallo from the company Creative Micro Systems from Vermont (USA), Dr. Patrick Dallasega from the Free University of Bolzano (Italy) as well as around 10 students from WPI participated to the course and workshop. The design principles of AD were applied in practical case studies of the company Creative Micro Systems by using the software Acclaro. A special focus was set on use cases involving advanced technology like virtual and augmented reality.

From 24 - 25 May 2018 the University of Leoben in Austria was the venue for the second annual meeting of the EU project SME 4.0, which aims to introduce Industry 4.0 in small and medium-sized enterprises and to develop suitable technologies and methods for this purpose. Nearly 30 professors, scientists and young researchers from Austria, Slovakia, Italy, the USA, Thailand and India as well as 2 representatives of the Slovakian partner company Elcom sro met in Leoben to discuss the transfer of Industry 4.0 topics to SMEs and to determine the next steps in the project. The meeting also provided an opportunity to evaluate the progress of the project and the work carried out together with the EU project manager from Brussels, with particular praise for the communication and dissemination to date.
